Roland Garros 2021: My candidate

It’s not a secret that the bottom half of the men’s draw is pretty much open to anyone due to the frozen ranking putting Nadal, Djokovic and Federer in the same half, and the early exit of who many now called “The Prince of Clay” Dominic Thiem.

My pick to give the surprise, is Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has had a great clay season so far, winning two of the last five tournaments he played (Monte Carlo, Lyon), and losing to Nadal in the Barcelona Open final.

He beat Jeremy Chardy in three sets in the first round and will meet Martinez in the second round. Based on how he plays the next following matches there is a very high chance that Tsitsipas will get at least to the final, the ultimate challenge would be beating Nadal in the final, if the Spaniard ever naturally passes past Djokovic and/or Federer.

If Stefanos lifts the trophy, I will say with confidence that it would be time to stop categorizing him as a Next Gen player.
