Every time there is a new player that people start talking about I can’t help it but get excited and wonder if he is the one that is going to make history in the upcoming years. To be honest, I don’t think that any of the guys that are now inside the top 20 are going to get even close to the achievements of Roger, Rafa, or Novak; not Shapovalov, not Thiem, not Zverev.
This week you cannot watch a whole tennis match, at least on the men’s side, without hearing the name Lorenzo Musetti, and that is why the 18-year-old Italian just won his first ATP main draw match beating no other than Stan Wawrinka. If that was not enough, the next round he beat Kei Nishikori, valid to mention that he did so without losing a set. These two experienced players are not at their best right now, they might even be at the end of their careers, at least for Stan. However, this doesn’t discredit what Musetti accomplished. When a teenager playing their first or second professional match beat an experienced, ranked player it is most common to occur in a WTA tournament, where there has been less consistency in the past years and we have seen any player, ranked or not, lift different Grand Slams trophies.
So going back to Lorenzo Musetti… he was a one-handed backhand, which he hits effortlessly, a nice solid forehand and moves nicely around the court. Besides that, he has experience as a Juniors player, winning the US Open and Australian Open consecutively.
Will the baton from Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic be passed onto the teenager’s hands?
