Australian Open: Week 1

In this post I will probably tell you what you already know, but more than that I will share how I feel about this tournament in particular. My favorite Grand Slam will always be Wimbledon by far, and I don’t think that will change anytime soon, yet the past few years I’ve loved what has been happening at the first grand slam of the year. Since Angelique Kerber lifted the trophy three years ago I started seeing it as the tournament where great things happen and dreams start to come true, another example is the women’s champion last year. We all spent years watching Caroline Wozniacki, her fight, her strength, but she would always come up short speaking of Grand Slams, and last year it finally happened. After years she was finally called a grand slam champion. Moreover, Wawrinka aka Stan the Man also won his first ever Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open.

I’m writing this hours after Stefanos Tsitsipas just beat the greatest player of all time in the fourth round, in fourth sets. Some compared this match to the one Federer and Sampras had more than fifteen years ago at Wimbledon. I enjoy how in these weeks of January we start picking our favorites for the best of the season. Even though Anisimova lost to Kvitova, we already know what a great player she is going to be and a very possible number one in the world. Also, the American Frances Tiafoe, who just turned twenty one years old, beat Grigor Dimitrov to reach his first QF in a Grand Slam.

The next gen is starting to become the now gen, and even though that is a bad joke, it is the truth.

And we still have one more week to go…

Stay tuned
